24th PAIZ ART BIENNIAL

THE WORLD TREE

In The Weaving of Silence, Verónica Riedel immerses us in the living body of Lake Atitlán. The installation unfolds across multiple dimensions: vast translucent canvases of bioleather made from Hydrilla verticillata —the urban and invasive weed— descend like luminous skins of water. Within their layers drift the spectral forms of cyanobacteria, suspended between decay and regeneration. Riedel’s project is an act of transformation: an ecology of giving and receiving inspired by the Mayan worldview, where every material gesture holds the possibility of renewal. The Weaving of Silence is both art and evidence: a space of listening where matter, code, and spirit converge in a single continuous pulse.

Mayan cosmology permeates this project as a living connection between the body of the lake and the human body. Through ancestral healing herbs incorporated into the materials, the work seeks to reactivate forgotten knowledge of healing, proposing an alchemy between art, biology, and sacred memory to symbolically restore the balance of the lake.

Tul (Schoenoplectus californicus), an ancestral aquatic plant from Lake Atitlán, has long been woven by Mayan communities into mats, roofs, and rafts. Beyond its cultural significance, it naturally filters and protects the lake’s ecosystem. Its disappearance due to pollution disrupts this balance, making its recovery a way of restoring the lake’s living memory and breath.
